KUWAIT: On the occasion of the Cairo International Book Fair, running from Jan 24 to Feb 6, Edaat Publication and Distribution House is showcasing “Women in Ismail Abdullah Theater” at its stand in Hall 1 A19. Authored by Dr Nermin Al-Houti, a member of the teaching faculty at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, the book has gained significant traction with extensive sales of copies.

Spanning approximately 325 pages across three chapters, the first chapter presents a historical panorama by Dr Houti, exploring the evolution of women on stage. Beginning with the nuanced relationship between women in theater and support theater, the journey spans Greek and ancient Roman times, through the Middle Ages, and encompasses global and Arab theaters, concluding with a focus on women’s portrayal in UAE theater.

The second chapter, titled “Ismail Abdullah Theater”, encompasses various sub-titles. It opens with an introduction to playwright Ismail Abdullah, detailing his biography and artistic journey. The analysis delves into Abdullah’s theatrical creations, examining elements such as the play’s title, character names, text, dramatic structure and thematic units. The chapter also explores Abdullah’s distinctive writing characteristics, including scenic representation, viewer engagement, motivation, dramatization and his incorporation of heritage elements like beliefs, proverbs, anecdotes, songs and poetry.

The third and final chapter, “Women’s Image in Ismail Abdullah Theater”, offers a comprehensive conclusion. Dr Houti examines how women’s issues are addressed, exploring the dimensions of female characters and the patterns within the play’s text structure.

Additionally, Dr Houti has received an invitation from Abdulaziz Saud Al-Babtain Cultural Establishment to attend the third Forum for Just Peace Culture in Cairo. The event, scheduled from January 28 to 30 and held under the patronage of Egyptian President Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi, is in collaboration with the Higher Council of Culture. Themed “Just Peace for Development,” the forum highlights the late Abdulaziz Saud Al-Babtain’s commitment to cultural endeavors and charitable initiatives, a legacy continued by his sons. This cultural project reflects the late Babtain’s dedication to ideas, principles and human values throughout his life.
