Missing persons in conflict: Kuwait calls for unifying efforts

JEDDAH: Kuwaiti Assistant Foreign Minister for Prisoners and Missing Persons Affairs, Ambassador Rabie Al-Adsani, called on Thursday for united international community’s efforts regarding missing persons in armed conflicts and disasters. This came during Ambassador Al-Adsani’s participation in a high-level round table organized by the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in coordination with the delegation of the regional mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross to the Cooperation Council for the Arab Gulf States.

The Kuwaiti official also called for establishing specialized national bodies whenever necessary to coordinate missing persons’ search efforts and to manage collection of data related to their identification. Further, he stressed the importance of encouraging countries to ratify and implement international agreements related to missing persons in conflict and updating national legislation on that matter.

During the talks, Al-Adsani touched on the Kuwaiti experience regarding prisoners and missing persons in all its political, technical and social aspects, and its role in sponsoring and presenting Resolution (2474) of UN Security Council in mid-2019. Resolution (2474) is the first to deal with the issue of missing persons and the protection of civilians in armed conflicts, which reflects the status of Kuwaiti diplomacy at the level of humanitarian efforts.

The round table discussed how to address missing persons during conflicts and disasters issue, in order to enhance the response of the Organization’s member states. Kuwait’s side was represented by Ambassador Al-Adsani and First Secretary of the Kuwaiti Delegation to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Turki Al-Daihani. — KUNA
