International Friends Club hosts girgian celebration, highlighting women’s role

KUWAIT: The International Friends Club hosted a girgian celebration on Thursday, shortly after International Women’s Day, bringing together diplomats, ambassadors, and club members for a night of cultural exchange and festivity. Sheikha Hala Bader Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, honorary member, emphasized the crucial role of women in shaping societies. “As women, we have proven our presence in every sector — whether in diplomacy, governance, or leadership,” she stated, highlighting her hopes for continued progress for Kuwaiti, Arab, and all women around the world. She added, “Men cannot move forward without women. We are the pillars of homes, societies and institutions.”

Sheikha Hala further remarked, “Ambassadors and diplomats here often miss their families. Kuwait has always been a welcoming place, so we wanted to create a space where they could come together, experience our traditions, and feel at home. Some are new and unfamiliar with our committee, making this a wonderful opportunity to introduce them to our work, reconnect and celebrate.”

She added, “We organized a traditional Kuwaiti Ramadan for them, and now it’s their turn to share their customs and how they celebrate Ramadan.” Sheikha Hanaa Al-Sabah, member of the club, oversaw and supervised the event preparations, ensuring an engaging experience for all attendees. The club’s advisor, Narjes Alshatti, provided insights into Kuwaiti Ramadan traditions, delighting both children and adults with stories of cultural heritage.

She explained that girgian bears similarities to Halloween, as children dress up in unique costumes representing beloved cartoon characters and sing traditional songs that have been passed down for generations. Today, nearly every Kuwaiti household cherishes this tradition, fostering joy among neighbors through the exchange of gifts and sweets for children. The evening also featured a ghabga, an authentic Ramadan tradition where people gather for late-night social visits, exchanging Ramadan greetings. The celebration was enriched with servings of Arabic coffee, tea, and a selection of Kuwaiti sweets, highlighting the flavors of the holy month.
