Asima gov underlines importance of ports in boosting the economy

KUWAIT: Asima governor Sheikh Abdullah Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah stressed on Monday the importance of the role of the General Authority for Ports in boosting the Kuwaiti economy, especially through the non-oil revenues. This came in a statement by Sheikh Abdullah Salem Al-Ali after an inspection tour he made to the General Authority for Ports and Shuwaikh Port, accompanied by the Director General of the Corporation Sheikh Khalid Salem Abdulaziz Al-Sabah, with the aim of reviewing the progress of work and the departments operating at the port.

Sheikh Abdullah Salem Al-Ali noted the role of the corporation in moving the economic wheel, as it is considered the safety valve and the backbone of the Kuwaiti economy, as most of Kuwait’s imports pass through it. He praised the efforts to develop Shuwaikh Port and all Kuwaiti ports. He called on the employees to do more in order to achieve the required developmental role in accordance with the vision of New Kuwait 2035 and work to develop electronic services and all facilities to make a qualitative leap in the future.

For his part, Sheikh Khalid Al-Sabah said that the project to develop Shuwaikh Port is one of the most important projects included in the development plan. He added that the completion rate of the project reached 62 percent and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, stressing that the project will benefit the economy greatly. He explained that berths (1 and 2) will be allocated for imports of the Kuwait Flour Mills and Bakeries Company, while the other berths will be allocated to receive and handle general cargo ships, in line with the state’s interest in strengthening the food security system.

He pointed to the importance of the project currently being implemented in cooperation with the Korean company Hyundai in implementing the state’s vision to diversify the economy and sources of income, enhance non-oil revenues, and transform the country into a financial and commercial center on a regional and international scale. — KUNA
