KUWAIT: Kuwait, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomatic mission in The Hague, submitted a written plea to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday regarding the advisory opinion requested by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 79/232. The resolution, adopted on December 19, 2024, in New York, seeks a legal opinion on the obligations of Israel, as the occupying power, in relation to the presence and activities of the UN, other international organizations, and third states within the occupied Palestinian territories.
The ICJ's advisory opinion aims to address several critical issues, including ensuring the unimpeded delivery of essential supplies, services, and humanitarian aid to the Palestinian civilian population, as well as supporting the Palestinian people's right to self-determination.
In a press release, the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry stated that its pleading highlighted Israel's violations of the UN Charter and the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations, particularly concerning the safety of UN personnel and the protection of its facilities in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.
Furthermore, the pleading emphasized the necessity for Israel to adhere to international law and international humanitarian law, and to cease its actions in the Gaza Strip, which it described as facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
The Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry expressed confidence that the ICJ would give due consideration to its pleading, as well as those submitted by other nations and relevant international organizations, to facilitate the provision of essential services and humanitarian aid to Palestinians and to ensure respect for the rights of international organizations operating in the occupied territories.
Kuwait reiterated its firm and unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and all international efforts aimed at securing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. - KUNA
