KUWAIT: The Center for Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Studies at Kuwait University organized an event to commemorate the 60th anniversary of constitution. Political Science Professor Dr Ghanem Al-Najjar explained the history of the constitution and electoral culture in Kuwait. Late Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah had vast knowledge about foreign culture, and was praised by late Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser for opening up the political scene, which had a great impact on the Kuwaiti society at the time.

The constitution played an important role in the independence of Kuwait in 1961. "Kuwait since the 1950s was ambitious, with the growth of oil income and the development of many sectors as well as improving the living standards of Kuwaitis. The constitution as an idea came to organize life as a representative of the people by electing a council with the help of Arab consultants," Najjar said. "The constitution transformed Kuwait into a country of institutions, as today we are ambitious about the future," Najjar added.

A photo exhibition depicting the efforts of Kuwait's statesmen in the establishment of the modern state was also held. The pictures, displayed at Kuwait University's campus in Shuwaikh, illustrate the story of Kuwait's Constitutional Assembly in which the constitution was promulgated. The articles of the constitution organize the nature of relations between the governors and the governed, as well as various aspects of life.
