KUWAIT: Jenan Behzad, Secretary-General of the Kuwait Society for Environmental Protection, emphasized that contributing to building a sustainable environment involves achieving a balance in procurement and consumption processes. This, in turn, contributes to preserving biodiversity and ensuring the continuity of natural wealth for both current and future generations. These remarks were made during a scientific lecture organized by the Environmental Affairs Department of the Public Authority for Housing Welfare, focusing on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 12 (responsible consumption and production).

"Goal 12 emphasizes the need to establish a sustainable consumption and production pattern, striving to strike a balance between the needs of present and future generations. The scientific lecture aimed at reducing overconsumption, promoting sustainable production, and enhancing resource efficiency. It highlighted the importance of enforcing laws, discouraging the purchase of single-use products, promoting effective waste management and encouraging the recycling of resources to alleviate environmental pressure,” explained Behzad.

To achieve sustainable consumption, Behzad stressed the significance of educating consumers and encouraging informed consumption decisions. This involves supporting environmentally friendly products and initiatives that contribute to minimizing the environmental impact of consumption.

"The pursuit of Goal 12 is integral to the shift toward a more sustainable and equitable economy. The international community aims to realize this goal through cooperation, technology exchange and knowledge sharing to enhance environmental performance and foster sustainable practices globally,” Behzad added. Behzad noted that a focus on sustainable purchasing raises awareness among consumers about the environmental impact of their choices. Informed consumers can play a pivotal role in influencing companies to improve their sustainability practices.

In conclusion, Behzad highlighted the critical importance of achieving a balance in buying and consumption for a sustainable environment. This balance encompasses various aspects that bring substantial benefits to both the environment and society, including the conservation of natural resources, reduction of waste and pollution and mitigation of climate change.
