MPs pay tribute to late Amir, pledge loyalty to new Amir

KUWAIT: MPs on Sunday paid rich tributes to late Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who passed away on Saturday, describing him as a humble man who will be missed by Arabs and Muslims. At the same time, they pledged loyalty to the new Amir HH Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who was proclaimed Amir by the Cabinet hours after the late Amir passed away.

Sheikh Mishal will assume his constitutional power only after he takes the constitutional oath before the National Assembly, which is due to convene a special session within a few days for this purpose. Arab and world leaders and senior officials started arriving in Kuwait on Sunday to offer their countries’ condolences to HH Sheikh Mishal.

Assembly Speaker Ahmad Al-Saadoun expressed his deepest condolences on the passing of HH Sheikh Nawaf, recalling the historical stances of the late Amir and his wise leadership of the country, during which the country witnessed major political and legal reforms that led to a state of stability and construction. Saadoun also sent a letter of condolences on his behalf and on behalf of lawmakers to the new Amir HH Sheikh Mishal.

MP Marzouq Al-Ghanem expressed his sadness and sorrow over the passing of the late Amir Sheikh Nawaf, saying it was a great loss for the Kuwaiti people as well as for Arabs and Muslims. Ghanem said he frequently met the late Amir during the 10 years he was the speaker of the Assembly, firstly when Sheikh Nawaf was Crown Prince and later when he became the Amir, adding he was an extremely humble man. He also pledged loyalty to HH the Amir Sheikh Mishal.

MP Mohammad Al-Huwailah expressed warm condolences to HH the Amir Sheikh Mishal, the Kuwaiti people and the Arab and Muslim people for the great loss of Sheikh Nawaf. He said he greatly served his people and the Arabs and Muslims as well. Huwailah said he will be remembered by the Kuwaiti people for a long time as a great leader.
