KUWAIT: It’s the enchanting moments explored in movies that continuously keep us captivated by cinema, providing a chance to fully immerse ourselves in alternate worlds, momentarily losing touch with our reality. Movies serve as a means to address our hidden desires, alleviate pain and offer an escape from loneliness by connecting us with diverse characters and the conflicts they navigate. The journeys and stories of these characters often lead us to yearn to be part of their fictional realities, finding companionship, rediscovering lost relationships with family members or experiencing the compassion of a desired love story.
In a conversation with Kuwait Times, Mohamed Maged, an international award-winning film director and founder of a media production company in Kuwait, passionately shared his perspective on the profound impact movies can have on us. Maged believes that movies extend beyond mere entertainment, serving as sources of inspiration, self-reflection and education.
The power of storytelling
According to Maged, the essence of compelling movies lies in strong storytelling. The power of a story transcends its narrative, emotionally engaging viewers. A seamless blend of artistic elements such as cinematography, acting, editing, music and sound effects creates a rich experience that fully involves the audience. Maged highlighted scenes in movies that moved audiences to tears or excitement, emphasizing the belief that when viewers feel the story, they believe in its authenticity.
Opens a window into different cultures and views
Maged asserted that films possess a remarkable ability to bridge gaps by providing a window into worlds otherwise inaccessible. They expose us to diverse perspectives, cultures and experiences, broadening horizons. Even for those residing in peaceful regions, movies can simulate war, poverty or cruelty, fostering understanding and empathy. They help audiences make sense of their realities and those of others.
Source of inspiration
Movies often mirror our struggles, ambitions and dreams, making characters and conflicts relatable. Witnessing a character overcome obstacles can serve as a potent source of motivation, inspiring individuals to pursue their goals despite challenges. Maged cited instances of people achieving success in football or filmmaking, influenced by fictional role models. “Cinema inspires you, strengthens you, guides you and educates you. That should be the ultimate purpose of media,” he said.
Encourages social change
Maged acknowledged cinema’s dual nature as both showbusiness and a catalyst for cultivating values. While films entertain, they also provoke thought, shaping societies and influencing people’s ideologies. Maged pointed to movies that sparked revolutions against tyranny, corruption and injustice, highlighting filmmaking as a lasting form of art with a significant societal impact.
In essence, according to Maged, the enchantment of cinema is its magical spark that makes it an indispensable part of our lives. By mirroring society and addressing human issues, movies touch our hearts, evoke empathy and connect us to a different reality.
