Kuwaiti boxer calls for more recognition of combat sports

By Ghadeer Ghloum

KUWAIT: “It was a great achievement for my country ranking 6th in the world. Winning seven medals with seven players!” With these words, Kuwaiti boxing champion, Abdulaziz Al-Shammar, who stood third in boxing at 2023 World Combat Games in Riyadh, expressed his pride mixed with regret to Kuwait Times for what Kuwaiti champions in combat sports see as a lack of attention and recognition from their country, which kills their passion and frustrates and saddens them.

Shammar said despite Kuwait ranking sixth in the world in combat games, little to no attention was given to this remarkable success. Not only there was no consideration shown after this achievement, but also before joining the 2023 World Combat Games, he indicated the Kuwaiti team’s preparations could have been better. He expressed pride in Kuwaiti men and women champions who won medals, be it in the first, second or third places, highlighting that seven medals were brought home by seven Kuwaiti champions, but no rewards or recognition were given to the winners from those responsible for sports, especially in the field of combat.

However, Shammar said that his family and friends were his reward for his victory in this championship. He called for security, peace and constant stability for his beloved country Kuwait and wished for the safety of innocents in Palestine.

According to Shammar, Kuwait possesses exceptional talents that have the potential to elevate the state’s name in the world of sports, as Kuwaiti champions have already demonstrated at different levels in sports. It is crucial for Kuwait to recognize and showcase these national talents, rather than confining its focus to a selected category of sports. By embracing a more inclusive approach, Kuwait can provide opportunities for citizen champions and position itself as a formidable contender in the sports arena across all levels.
