Kuwait mourns icon Hussein Al-Qattan, star of first TV drama

KUWAIT: The Ministry of Information has announced the passing of veteran Kuwaiti artist Hussein Al-Qattan, who died on Saturday at the age of 88, following a long and distinguished career that helped shape Kuwait’s media, arts, and cultural landscape. In an official statement, the ministry conveyed the condolences of Minister of Information and Culture and Minister of State for Youth Affairs, Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, along with all ministry staff, to the late artist’s family. The statement paid tribute to Al-Qattan’s profound and lasting contributions to the history of Kuwaiti artistic expression.

A true pioneer of Kuwaiti media, Al-Qattan rose to prominence in the 1950s through radio, before gaining widespread recognition for his portrayal of the beloved character “Bu Jassoum” in Kuwait Television’s first-ever drama series, “Bu Jassoum’s Family,” which aired in 1962. He was among the earliest artists to use comedy as a vehicle for social commentary, portraying the hopes, struggles, and daily lives of ordinary Kuwaitis with simplicity, humor, and heartfelt sincerity. His folkloric style and genuine presence made him a household name, leaving an indelible mark on audiences across generations. Throughout his decades-long career, Al-Qattan took part in numerous television and theatrical productions that became cornerstones of Kuwait’s cultural identity. He is remembered not only as a celebrated performer but also as an authentic voice of the people and a symbol of Kuwait’s artistic beginnings. The ministry extended its deepest sympathies to Al-Qattan’s family, friends, and the wider media and artistic community, praying for his soul’s mercy and for comfort to those who mourn him. — Agencies
