Japan optimistic about strengthened friendship with Kuwait, Ambassador Mukai says

TOKYO: Kuwait and Japan agreed to comprehensive cooperation in the fields of electricity, water, and renewable energy, through the signing of a cooperation agreement between Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Japan’s Ambassador to Kuwait Kenichiro Mukai said.

The agreement is one of several signed between Kuwait and Japan last week during the visit of His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah. The statement, which the ambassador made to KUNA, is the first by any official to share insights into the agreements with Kuwaiti media.

“I am pleased to express our pride in His Highness’ successful visit to Japan, during which he met with His Majesty Emperor Naruhito, Crown Prince Fumihito, and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The two countries agreed to elevate our bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership,” he said. His Highness the Crown Prince also visited Expo 2025 in the city of Osaka.

Among the signed agreements was a memorandum of understanding on diplomatic training between the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ambassador expressed hope for further enhanced cooperation between the two ministries.

He also pointed to the signing of a memorandum of understanding on direct investment between the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and Kuwait’s Direct Investment Promotion Authority, which is expected to expand the presence of Japanese companies and increase their investments in the Kuwaiti market in the future. “We are optimistic that this visit and its outcomes will strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation and further solidify the strong and enduring relationship based on shared values and interests between Japan and Kuwait,” he said. “Japan looks forward to continuing its work with His Highness and with the government of Kuwait to deepen and advance our relations in all fields and at all levels.”

Kuwait’s Ambassador to Japan, Sami Al-Zamanan, affirmed on Saturday that the visit of His Highness the Crown Prince represents a “historic turning point” in the bilateral relations between the two countries.

In a statement to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) following the conclusion of His Highness’ visit to Japan, Ambassador Al-Zamanan said that the level of meetings held by His Highness — including with the Emperor of Japan and the Crown Prince — reflects the deep mutual respect between the two nations. — KUNA
