NEW DELHI: Kuwait’s Ambassador to India Mishal Al-Shamali praised the Indian government’s recognition of Sheikha Shaikha Ali Al-Jaber Al-Sabah with the prestigious Padma Shri award, calling it a proud moment for Kuwait and a testament to the strength of bilateral relations between the two countries.

In a statement to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Al-Shamali highlighted the significance of the award, noting that Sheikha Sheikha is the first Kuwaiti citizen to receive the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors. The award was presented in an official ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in New Delhi.

“The Indian government’s honoring of Sheikha Sheikha Al-Sabah for her efforts in promoting yoga and advancing mental and physical wellness in Kuwait and the Arab world reflects the depth and diversity of Kuwaiti-Indian relations,” Al-Shamali said. Sheikha Shaikha emphasized that this milestone strengthens Kuwait’s cultural and people-to-people ties with India. “It’s a clear indication of the appreciation and respect between our nations," she said.

Sheikha Shaikha is the founder of the Atma Yoga Center, which has helped promote yoga as a path to health and wellbeing in the region. The award was officially announced during India’s Republic Day celebrations on January 26. The Padma Shri is granted to individuals with distinguished contributions in various fields including public service, science, medicine, arts, and education. — KUNA
