KUWAIT: Kuwait University (KU) and the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) have signed a landmark agreement to establish and operate the Kuwait National Center for Space Research (KNCS), a key initiative aimed at enhancing scientific research in space sciences and technologies. The agreement reflects a shared commitment to advancing Kuwait’s role on the global space stage and strengthening national research and education programs.
Speaking on the occasion, KU President Dr Dina Al-Mailem emphasized that the agreement responds to the growing national ambition to establish KNCS under the umbrella of KFAS, in partnership with Kuwait University. The center will be hosted at the Colleges of Science and Engineering, serving as a hub for innovation and academic collaboration in the rapidly evolving space sector.
Al-Mailem praised the longstanding partnership between KU and KFAS, describing it as a cornerstone of Kuwait’s progress in scientific research. “This agreement reinforces our dedication to producing world-class research outputs and contributes to positioning Kuwait as a key regional and international player in the space domain,” she said. She also commended KFAS for its ongoing efforts to build national capabilities in the space field, highlighting the agreement’s role in enhancing research cooperation and supporting the objectives of Kuwait’s national development plan.

KFAS Director General Dr Amina Farhan echoed these sentiments, noting that the strategic partnership aligns with the goals of the “New Kuwait 2035” vision, which seeks to transform the country into a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy. Dr Farhan described the KNCS as a continuation of Kuwait’s scientific journey, which gained momentum with the launch of KuwaitSat-1 in January 2023 — an achievement that placed Kuwait on the global space map. She emphasized that the new center will serve as a platform for excellence in space research, supporting the development of future scientific leaders and promoting national pride through youth engagement.
The center aims to foster innovation in space technology, build strategic collaborations with the private sector and international entities, and create investment opportunities in the emerging space economy. Key objectives include promoting academic programs in space sciences, cultivating a skilled workforce, and increasing public awareness through interactive initiatives. Dr Farhan concluded by reaffirming Kuwait’s dedication to leveraging opportunities in the space sector to drive scientific progress and sustainable economic growth, while inspiring future generations and paving the way for ambitious national space projects.— KUNA
