Greek ambassador inaugurates ‘Folded Sea’ exhibition

KUWAIT: On the occasion of Greek Independence Day, the Ambassador of Greece to Kuwait, Ioannis Plotas, alongside Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defense Sheikh Abdullah Meshal Al-Sabah and Assistant Foreign Minister for European Affairs Ambassador Sadiq Marafie, inaugurated the ‘Folded Sea’ exhibition by artist Calliope at the Contemporary Art Platform.

In his remarks, Plotas underscored the resilience of the Greek diaspora, whose collective efforts fueled the Greek independence movement, spurred by the wave of Philhellenism across Europe at the time. Reflecting on contemporary geopolitical challenges, he emphasized that the foundational principles of Greek independence — freedom, democracy, and dignity — remain crucial in today’s pursuit of justice and sovereignty.

Highlighting the strong Kuwaiti-Greek ties, Plotas noted that the two nations share deeply rooted values, mutual respect, and a common vision for regional stability and prosperity. He described Kuwait as a key strategic partner for Greece in the Gulf and the broader Middle East. He further highlighted the historical connection between the two nations, recalling that Failaka Island was settled by Alexander the Great and emphasizing their shared maritime heritage, which has fostered a unique bond.

Plotas also shed light on Greece’s recent economic advancements, including successive credit rating upgrades and its reclassification to investment grade. He extended an invitation to Kuwaiti businesses to explore investment opportunities in Greece’s energy, tourism, infrastructure and technology sectors. Additionally, he encouraged Greek enterprises to engage in Kuwait’s ‘Vision 2035’ mega-projects, reinforcing bilateral economic cooperation.

As Greece assumes its role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Plotas reaffirmed the country’s commitment to addressing global challenges, including the climate crisis, the promotion of children’s rights, the empowerment of women in peace and security efforts, and ensuring maritime security. Concluding his address, Plotas expressed gratitude to attendees for their participation and extended his best wishes for a joyous Eid celebration.
