Hamad International Airport completes expansion

DOHA: Hamad International Airport (HIA), ranked the World’s Best Airport and Best Airport Shopping by Skytrax in 2024, has completed the addition of Concourses D and E, marking the second phase of a project launched in 2018. These new concourses increase HIA’s capacity to 65 million passengers, adding 842,000 m² to the terminal, 102,000 m² of floor space, 2,700 m² of retail space, and 17 new contact gates, totaling a nearly 40 percent increase in capacity. The expansion will help move 13 million passengers annually, eliminating 350,000 bus journeys.

As Qatar prepares to host various international tournaments such as the Arab Cup, FIFA Under-17, F1, and MotoGP, this expansion is a vital support pillar for Qatar’s ambitions. Qatar Airways Group CEO Badr Al-Meer explains: “It strengthens the entire Qatar Airways network and supports Qatar’s economic growth in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.”

To achieve its ranking, HIA has developed a grand vision, as HIA COO Hamad Al-Khater shares: “Hamad International Airport is more than a gateway; it’s a destination in its own right,” featuring 200 retail and dining outlets, over 50 airline partners, and The Orchids Garden, which spans 10,000 m². Connectivity is a key part of HIA’s goals, with initiatives such as self-boarding and the deployment of autonomous vehicles.

HIA has also focused on sustainability, earning GSAS 4-Star and LEED Gold certifications for energy efficiency, innovative water management, and thermal comfort strategies. Senior Project Director Peter Daley explains: “The market for air travel in the region is very tough. You need to develop and stand apart from the competition.”

Accessibility is a priority for HIA, with design features like obstacle-free hallways and biometric gate access to enhance the experience for all passengers, including those with special needs. “Electronic and smart gates aid travel as it’s a tiring task. It is greatly appreciated by those with special needs. These enhancements uplift the overall customer experience,” says Abdullah Al-Shayji, a professional photographer.

Looking to the future, aviation blogger Sam Chui, with a massive following told Kuwait Times: “Passing through an airport should be an enjoyable experience. HIA is a prime example of an airport built to provide a seamless passenger journey.” Jonny Clark, founder of TheDesignAir, adds: “The region’s air transport landscape is booming, and there remains a strong appeal for hub-and-spoke carriers, even as point-to-point travel becomes more convenient.”
