KUWAIT: The WCC AISBL Executive Board and concerned members have officially approved the designation of Kuwait City as a “WCC-World Craft City for Al-Sadu Weaving,” recognizing its outstanding contributions to preserving and promoting this traditional craft. This momentous achievement follows an official evaluation visit conducted by a distinguished delegation of expert jurors from the World Crafts Council (WCC). Hosted by the Al-Sadu Society and its Honorary President, Sheikha Altaf Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah, along with its President, Sheikha Bibi Al-Sabah, the delegation assessed Kuwait’s commitment to safeguarding and advancing the art of Sadu weaving.
Sadu weaving, a cherished traditional craft, reflects Kuwait’s rich cultural heritage through its intricate geometric patterns and vibrant colors. Historically vital to the Bedouin way of life, it was used in making tents, furnishings, and decorative textiles. Today, it continues to thrive as an emblem of national identity and artisanal excellence.
During their visit, the evaluation committee—comprising Saad Hani Al-Qaddoumi, President of the WCC, Dr Kevin Murray, Vice President of WCC (Australia), Dr Carol Lopez, President of the WCC Americas (USA), Dr Nadia Meer, Vice President of the WCC Africa (South Africa), Mahmood Ahmad Shah, Director of Handicrafts & Tourism in Kashmir (India) and Professor Shumish Singh, Advisory Member of WCC (India)—toured key cultural sites, including Sadu House. The delegation observed skilled artisans demonstrating traditional weaving techniques and explored Kuwait’s efforts to sustain and develop this craft.
Meetings with government representatives, cultural institutions, and local artisans further reinforced Kuwait’s dedication to integrating Sadu weaving into the global handicraft landscape. This prestigious designation by the WCC places Kuwait City on the global craft map, highlighting its deep-rooted tradition of Sadu weaving. As a recognized World Craft City, Kuwait gains opportunities for cultural promotion, government support, and creative tourism development.
The designation also fosters international collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation in textile craftsmanship, ensuring the preservation and growth of this unique heritage while strengthening Kuwait’s role in the global craft sector. With Kuwait City’s official recognition as a WCC-World Craft City for Sadu Weaving, this prestigious designation highlights the nation’s steadfast commitment to preserving its craft heritage. It also paves the way for greater cultural tourism opportunities and new avenues for Kuwaiti artisans to engage with the international craft community.
