VIENNA: Kuwait’s Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna, Talal Al-Fassam, reiterated Kuwait’s unwavering commitment to combating drug-related challenges and strengthening international cooperation in addressing this global menace. Speaking at the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs, Al-Fassam underscored Kuwait’s deep appreciation for the Commission and the UN Secretariat’s efforts in organizing the session, emphasizing the importance of collective action in tackling drug-related threats to societies.
Al-Fassam highlighted Kuwait’s prioritization of drug control within its national policies, recognizing the severe impact of drug abuse on sustainable development and social stability. He outlined the country’s comprehensive approach, which includes stringent legislative measures, preventive and treatment programs, and a strong focus on international collaboration to address cross-border drug-related challenges.
He further detailed Kuwait’s efforts to enhance its legislative framework in alignment with international obligations, reinforce law enforcement mechanisms, and expand awareness, rehabilitation, and treatment initiatives aimed at reintegrating individuals recovering from addiction into society. In particular, he noted Kuwait’s dedication to protecting youth from drug addiction through awareness campaigns in collaboration with educational institutions and civil society organizations.
Al-Fassam also highlighted the recent establishment of an advanced addiction treatment center, reflecting Kuwait’s commitment to providing high-quality rehabilitation services based on the latest medical and scientific standards. This initiative, he said, strengthens Kuwait’s comprehensive strategy in tackling drug-related issues. Reaffirming Kuwait’s stance on national sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of states, Al-Fassam stressed the need to respect the legal, social, and religious diversity of member states when formulating international drug control policies, all while upholding human rights principles.
Concluding his speech, Al-Fassam reiterated Kuwait’s dedication to supporting global anti-drug efforts, urging intensified cooperation and a collective response to the drug crisis to ensure security, stability, and sustainable development for all nations. Ambassador Al-Fassam leads Kuwait’s delegation at the session, which includes Colonel Abdullah Al-Rabeeah and Lieutenant Colonel Mahdi Al-Enezi from the Ministry of Interior, Dr Hussein Al-Shatti from the Ministry of Health, and Third Secretary of the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Vienna, Rehab Al-Farhan. — KUNA
