Qatar Open joins ATP 500 with thrilling 2025 edition

Rublev defeats Draper in final as Doha cements status as premier tennis hub

DOHA: The Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2025 concluded in spectacular fashion at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, marking its first edition as an ATP 500 tournament. The upgrade elevated the event’s prestige, drawing top-ranked players and record-breaking attendance. The tournament featured some of the biggest names in men’s tennis, including world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Grigor Dimitrov and Matteo Berrettini. Their participation underscored the event’s growing importance on the ATP calendar.

The competition saw early upsets and intense battles as top contenders fought for the prestigious title. The final pitted Russia’s Andrey Rublev against Britain’s Jack Draper in a gripping three-set contest. Rublev emerged victorious with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 win, securing his first ATP 500 title in Doha after previously winning the tournament as an ATP 250 event.

“It feels amazing,” said the Russian on court at the end. “It’s my first ever title that I won twice.” Both men had battled to the final with demanding victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals. “I think both of us were really tired after two three-set matches that finished late,” said Rublev. “We were exhausted and it was difficult, but somehow we were able to play at a good level.”

After the first 11 games went with serve, Rublev broke the Briton to take the first set. The second set followed a similar pattern with Draper gaining the only break in the 11th game before holding serve to level the match. “When I lost the second set, I let it go and started to play more freely,” said Rublev.

The 27-year-old took control in the third set, breaking in the second and fourth games to lead 5-0. After Draper finally held, Rublev served out a love game to win the match in two hours and one minute. “I played at a good level,” said Rublev. “In some moments, I was really good mentally and didn’t let frustration get over me. As soon as I was frustrated, I was able to restart again and I was able to play at the same intensity. That’s the most important thing.” It was his 17th ATP Tour title, but first since winning in Madrid last May.

With its elevation to ATP 500 status, the Qatar ExxonMobil Open introduced improved facilities, attracting praise from players and fans alike. The event’s organization, hospitality and electric atmosphere further solidified Doha’s reputation as a premier tennis destination. The successful execution of the 2025 edition sets the stage for even greater prominence in the coming years. With Doha firmly established as a key stop on the ATP Tour, the Qatar ExxonMobil Open is poised to attract more top talent and continue its rise in global tennis. — Photos by Mohammad Shams
