MoH has made remarkable progress in field of anesthesia: Dr Al-Awadhi

149 kidney transplants performed at Jaber Hospital in 2024: Minister

KUWAIT: Minister of Health Dr Ahmad Al-Awadhi said that the field of anesthesia has recently witnessed remarkable development in doctors’ skills and expertise, especially in dealing with complex cases, indicating that as a result of this development, anesthesia departments were able to perform more complex surgeries than before.

Al-Awadhi explained in a speech at the opening of the 11th Anesthesia Conference on Saturday, with international participation, that the development in this field has led to a noticeable decrease in the rate of complications after surgeries, which contributed to providing distinguished medical services to patients. He pointed out that the anesthesia departments contributed to increasing the number of kidney transplants, achieving a new record number, as 149 kidney transplants were performed at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital during the past year, in addition to expanding pain treatment clinics.

He stated that the ministry has been keen over the past years to support the anesthesia specialty morally and materially, realizing its importance as one of the rare medical specialties in Kuwait. He said the ministry has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET) and the launch of an anesthesia technician specialization program to prepare qualified national cadres in rare specializations that are difficult to find among local cadres.

Minister Al-Awadhi said that this program will result in the graduation of national cadres that contribute to supporting the ministry and providing integrated medical services to citizens, pointing out that the implementation of modern work policies through the ministerial policies committee and the Departments Council with the aim of unifying the work mechanism and providing advanced medical services, especially for cancer patients through innovative techniques such as non-surgical interventions.

He added that the development was not limited to medical services only, but investment was made in the human element by holding many workshops and enhancing cooperation with international organizations in the field of anesthesia to exchange experiences and encourage scientific research. The entry of new hospitals into the health system also contributed to increasing the number of operating rooms and reducing patient waiting periods.

The head of the organizing committee of the conference, Dr Hassan Behbehani, said in a similar speech that the conference includes a number of diverse topics, all of which will positively reflect on developing the skills of medical cadres in Kuwait and providing safe and distinguished care to citizens and residents alike. This will in turn contribute to improving the quality of health services, he said. Behbehani explained that the conference is an important opportunity to enhance expertise, as it is attended by an elite group of anesthesia specialists from prestigious international medical centers to discuss the latest developments in this field.

The conference will also address the topic of anesthesia for pregnant women, which coincides with the opening of the new maternity hospital with advanced specifications. The conference will also include important topics such as pain management in children, peripheral anesthesia, and the role of artificial intelligence in anesthesia. — KUNA
