KUWAIT: The ministry of interior announced the arrest of an international cybercrime syndicate of Chinese nationals involved in large-scale cyberattacks on telecommunications towers and banks. The criminal security sector, represented by the cybercrime combat department, led the operation, uncovering an elaborate scheme aimed at breaching networks and stealing financial data.
According to a ministry statement on Thursday, the investigation began after telecommunications companies and banks reported cyber intrusions. Specialized security teams launched an immediate probe, discovering that the attacks originated externally using advanced electronic devices. The criminals had exploited vulnerabilities to send mass fraudulent messages impersonating banks, aiming to steal account information and funds.
Authorities tracked the source of the suspicious signals to a vehicle in Farwaniya. As security forces approached, disruptions in mobile networks were detected, along with sounds of electronic devices inside the car. The driver, a Chinese national, was arrested on the spot, and electronic devices were seized. A subsequent search of his residence, conducted under a warrant, uncovered additional hacking tools and data analysis equipment.
During questioning, the suspect admitted to working with accomplices to breach communication networks and conduct financial fraud. Investigations led to the identification and arrest of the remaining members of the cybercrime ring. Biometric fingerprint scans revealed discrepancies in their identities, exposing their use of forged documents to evade detection.
The suspects have been referred to the relevant authorities for legal proceedings. The ministry of interior reaffirmed its commitment to combating cyber threats, emphasizing that cybersecurity remains a top priority in protecting Kuwait’s financial and digital infrastructure.
