Embassy of Canada celebrates National Flag Day, Kuwait ties

As flag turns 60, Canada also marks 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations

KUWAIT: Embassy of Canada to Kuwait celebrated, on Monday, Canada’s National Flag Day at Jumeirah Messilah. During her opening remarks, the Canadian Ambassador Aliya Mawani highlighted, “In the year that our beloved flag turns 60, we are also celebrating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and Kuwait; 60 years of friendship between our countries and peoples.”

She stated: “Our 60th Flag Day and the Canada-Kuwait 60th anniversary come at a time of change and transformation in both our countries, and in the world at large, but they also coincide with both countries assuming key leadership roles – Canada as President of the G7 and Kuwait as President of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Arab Capital of Culture and Media for 2025 both as partners and members of the global community to pursue our shared commitment to humanitarian action, collaboration, and promoting global security and stability.

Both Canada and Kuwait favor a collective approach to solving problems and we firmly believe that more can be accomplished together.” Ambassador Mawani said, “As we celebrate Flag Day, I am deeply honored to recognize everyone who has contributed to the rich and dynamic Canada-Kuwait relationship over the past 60 years. It has been a privilege to meet and learn from those who embody the best of cultures, serving as daily champions of our partnership and building bridges between our nations.

Together, we can ensure that the Canada-Kuwait partnership remains strong and enduring, as we collectively work towards peace, security, and prosperity for our nations.” The Canadian ambassador emphasized that the celebration is part of an anniversary program of events and activities taking place throughout 2025 and is built around the theme of connection, highlighting key aspects of the relationship – from cultural exchange, to trade, cooperation in healthcare and education, information and communication technology, oil and gas, defense and security, sport, and food.

On the sidelines of the event, the photo exhibition “Take Your Seat, together: Canada and Kuwait” showcased a stunning collection of images captured by Canadian father-and-son duo Randy and Spencer VanDerStarren. Each photograph features a red and white director’s chair, symbolizing a universal language of unity and connection. Through architecture, people, culture, and landscapes, the exhibition highlights the beauty of both Canada and Kuwait while celebrating their shared bonds.
