KISR and WHO sign MoU for health development

‘We aim to develop joint work with global health systems’

KUWAIT: The World Health Organization and the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Wednesday that seeks to collaborate in order to improve health benefits in Kuwait, the region, and the world. Dr Faisal Al-Humaidan, Acting Director General of KISR, said, “Our objective in signing this MoU is to enhance the collaboration with the World Health Organization, as we hope that this agreement will benefit the country.”

”We aim to develop joint work with global health systems to achieve the goals of sustainable development, especially with regard to the concept of one health that achieves balance between humans and their surroundings. Through this memorandum of understanding, the Institute and various centers will be able to invest research results for the benefit of the country, especially in areas related to environmental health, occupational health, climate change, balancing or enhancing food security, and other areas,” Dr Al-Humaidan added.

For his part, WHO representative Dr. Assad Hafeez said, “It’s a matter of great honor for me today that we are signing a framework of cooperation with the Kuwait Institute of Scientific Research and the World Health Organization,” adding that the MoU will primarily focus on collaboration on research and development areas — specifically those that affect the health and well-being of populations. “There is expertise in the Kuwait Institute of Scientific Research for carrying out advanced research in antimicrobial resistance, environmental health, one health, and other areas that impact not only the well-being and health of the Kuwaiti population but also the extended region and around the globe,” he added.

“We hope that this coordination between this excellent institution in Kuwait and other institutions around the world would develop through a conduit of WHO, and I hope it would produce excellent and outstanding benefits,” Dr. Hafeez said. Dr. Tariq Al-Ati, associate research scientist working in the food security program in the life sciences, environmental life sciences research center, said: “We are very happy to finally sign the memorandum of understanding that will align our strategic objectives with the strategic objectives of the WHO office in Kuwait. We believe strongly that the health profile in Kuwait can be improved significantly with the help of various stakeholders in Kuwait, as our health profile needs a lot of work. We can do a lot of intervention studies to improve the health status of the Kuwaiti population.”
