ShareKUWAIT: Hundreds of local and international experts gathered this weekend at the first International Dasman Diabetes Summit (IDDS) to discuss the latest developments in diabetes science. The conference focused on advanced diabetes care, reviewing prevention methods, treatments, and the management of the disease’s complications.
Minister of Health Dr Ahmad Al-Awadhi highlighted that diabetes is a common chronic disease, both in Kuwait and globally, and is a leading cause of serious complications, including diabetic foot amputations, the second leading cause after road accidents.
Dr Al-Awadhi emphasized the importance of the conference in addressing various aspects of diabetes and hope that the discussions would contribute to improving healthcare services and strengthen scientific cooperation between Kuwait and international centers participating in the event.
Dr Faisal Al-Refaei, Acting Director General of the Dasman Diabetes Institute, said over 400 doctors, researchers, and specialists from Kuwait, the Gulf region, and internationally attended the conference. He said the conference served as a vital platform for sharing knowledge and fostering collaboration. Dr Al-Rifai noted that one in five people in Kuwait suffers from diabetes, and five GCC countries are among the top 10 globally for diabetes prevalence, underscoring the significance of the disease’s complications.
The Dasman Diabetes Institute, a leader in diabetes research and treatment in the Middle East, organized the conference to provide an opportunity for knowledge exchange and collaboration among healthcare professionals and researchers in the field of diabetes.
Dr Al-Awadhi acknowledged the institute’s ongoing efforts in diabetes research, prevention, and training healthcare providers, while emphasizing the Ministry of Health’s commitment to ensuring the availability of modern medical devices and treatments for diabetes patients. He also reaffirmed Kuwait’s dedication to improving public health through awareness campaigns, particularly on obesity. — KUNA
