Kuwait to directly contract Chinese firm for Mubarak Port

KUWAIT: Kuwait’s Cabinet authorized direct contracting with China Communications Construction Company Limited, a state-owned enterprise, to implement, manage, and operate the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port. This decision was made following the Cabinet’s weekly meeting on Tuesday, 21 Jan 2025, at Bayan Palace, chaired by His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.

The Cabinet’s decision came after reviewing a presentation from key officials, including Minister of Public Works Dr Noura Al-Mashaan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Al-Yahya, the Head of the Fatwa and Legislation Department Counselor Salah Ateeq Al-Majid, and Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Asian Affairs Ambassador Samih Jowhar Hayat. The presentation covered the latest updates on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Kuwait and the People’s Republic of China concerning cooperation on the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port Project, located on Boubyan Island. The project is set to be completed in three phases.

The Cabinet emphasized the significance of this development as a key regional transport hub. The port is expected to contribute to the northern region’s growth as an integrated economic and urban system, enhancing the nation’s efforts to diversify and increase its gross domestic product.

Following the presentation, the Cabinet approved the nomination put forward by the Chinese government in line with the MoU, confirming their cooperation on the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port Project.

In a separate decision, the Cabinet also approved recommendations from the Ministerial Committee for Public Services regarding two significant donations. The first donation, worth KD 15 million, comes from Kuwait Finance House to build and equip a heart disease and research center. The second, valued at KD 4.5 million, was made by the heirs of the late Khaled Zaid Al-Khaled to fund the construction of a health and dialysis center in Hawally.

The Cabinet expressed its deep gratitude for these generous donations, which reflect the donors’ commitment to supporting the development of Kuwait’s healthcare system and embody the spirit of community responsibility. — KUNA
