KUWAIT: Minister of Information and Culture and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi emphasized that Kuwait’s hosting of Khaleeji Zain 26 reflects the brotherhood and camaraderie uniting Gulf youth in a competitive yet harmonious sporting environment. Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the main media center at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Al-Mutairi, who chairs the Supreme Organizing Committee, highlighted the tournament’s rich history since its inception in 1970, calling it a beacon of youth sports in the Gulf region.
He expressed deep appreciation for the support of HH the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, HH the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah, noting their pivotal role in ensuring a world-class tournament.
Al-Mutairi underlined the committee’s efforts in equipping the media center with advanced resources to support local and international journalists in covering the event, emphasizing the importance of showcasing the tournament globally. He praised the organizing committee and youth volunteers for their dedication to preparing a memorable opening ceremony and ensuring the tournament’s success.
The minister highlighted the Gulf Cup’s role in fostering regional cooperation and advancing sports ambitions, citing examples like Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and Saudi Arabia’s upcoming 2034 FIFA World Cup and 2027 Asian Cup. He announced Kuwait’s plans to bid for the 2031 Asian Cup in collaboration with the Kuwait Football Federation, showcasing the country’s capabilities and talented workforce.
A dedicated quality committee was also formed to create a procedural guide and institutional memory to improve the organization of future events. Al-Mutairi welcomed fans and visitors to attend matches at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium and Jaber Al-Mubarak Stadium and encouraged them to explore Kuwait using the tournament’s official app, Hayakom, which highlights key tourist attractions.
Blue stars ready
National team goalkeeper Sulaiman Abdul Ghafoor emphasized the significance of every match in Khaleeji Zain 26, especially the opening game against Oman. "The opening match is crucial as we aim to redeem ourselves after the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. A strong start can positively influence the rest of the tournament,” he said.
Abdul Ghafoor acknowledged both the positive and negative pressures on the team, noting the strong backing from loyal Blue fans. He highlighted coach Juan Pizzi’s encouragement to enjoy the game while focusing on making fans happy, which helps alleviate pressure on the players.
Midfielder Fawaz Ayed Al-Otaibi praised the uniqueness of Gulf tournaments, which bring together Gulf nations in a spirit of unity. He noted that the competition in the first group, featuring Oman, Qatar and the UAE, would be tough but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to qualify for the semifinals with continued fan support.
Goalkeeper Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the distinctive nature of Gulf Cup tournaments, which foster friendly competition among players and fans alike. While he downplayed the importance of the opening match alone, he reiterated the team’s readiness to deliver strong performances throughout the tournament.
Team prepared for opening match
First team manager Abdulrahman Al-Mousa expressed his confidence in the players’ mental and physical readiness for the tournament, dismissing concerns about pressure from large crowds. "The fans are our number one player, and their support motivates the team,” he said. Al-Mousa noted the importance of the opening match against Oman, emphasizing that the team would not dwell on past results, whether positive or negative. Winning the first game, he added, helps build momentum and boosts morale.
Dr Abdulmajeed Al-Bannai, the team’s doctor, confirmed that all injured players have recovered and are ready for the opening match. He commended the medical team for preparing players within a short timeframe, ensuring the squad is in top form for the tournament.
