Calling on the finance ministry to support NGOs

Since the United Nations adopted the 2015–2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, NGOs have taken on a more significant role as partners, not only with governments but also with the UN itself. NGOs support government plans, assist international organizations in promoting their missions and goals, and contribute to achieving global strategies.

The UN system increasingly relies on the expertise and active participation of NGOs across various sectors, including education, health, and human rights. Kuwait stands out as one of the first countries to recognize the importance of civil society, even before many developed nations. This early focus on civil engagement has ensured that Kuwait’s voice remains prominent in international forums. It is hoped that the state, under the wise leadership of its rulers, will continue to support and safeguard this vital civil activity.

Recently, however, many NGOs were caught off guard by a decision from the Ministry of Finance to evict them from their headquarters, which are state-owned properties. They were given only three months to vacate, with no alternative spaces provided, despite the investments these NGOs have made in their current locations to fulfill their missions, which ultimately benefit the state.

The Ministry of Social Affairs has worked diligently to coordinate with the Ministry of Finance to extend the contracts of these NGOs for two years, allowing them time to relocate or build on allocated land. This would provide the stability necessary for these organizations to continue their essential work.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, 22 NGOs have called on the Ministry of Finance to reconsider and collaborate with them for the greater good. The core issue lies in how decision-makers perceive the role of NGOs. If they truly recognize the value of voluntary and civil work in supporting the state’s broader goals, they will understand the necessity of providing stable headquarters for these organizations.

This is what the NGOs hope to see from the Minister of Finance, especially after her recent meeting with NGO representatives. As Kuwait embraces reform and development, it is essential that the government, particularly the Ministry of Finance, collaborates with civil society and understands their needs. This cooperation is crucial to building a brighter future for all, in alignment with the vision of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al- Hamad Al-Sabah.
