ShareKUWAIT: In an event that seamlessly intertwined art, community, and heartfelt compassion, Heartful II lit up Bayt Abdullah Children’s Hospice (BACCH) on December 5-6, 2024. The second edition of the charitable art exhibition celebrated the theme of “Play, Exchange, and Interconnectivity” through the works of 32 artists and the vibrant participation of children. Margaret Al-Sayer, Co-Founder and Founding Director of KACCH & BACCH, described the event as “truly heartfelt and moving.” She emphasized how it aligned perfectly with Bayt Abdullah’s mission. “It’s wonderful to see so many artists take the time to create these beautiful works of art for Bayt Abdullah,” she said, adding that the exhibition raised awareness about pediatric palliative care and its profound impact. “Our staff excels at explaining what we do, and once people understand our mission, they are incredibly supportive.”
At the heart of the event were workshops where children collaborated with local artists to create deeply personal and expressive art pieces. “These artworks represent a blend of the children’s creativity and the artists’ guidance. Some of the children reflected on what they love most in life, while others used their art to discuss their disease or aspects of their lives,” explained Dr Tala Al-Dabbous, CEO and Director of Clinical Services at KACCH and BACCH.
Dr Al-Dabbous highlighted the role of expressive art therapy. “Art allows children to express emotions they might not have the words to convey. Whether it’s sadness, fear, or hope, you can sense their feelings through their pieces,” she said. She added that the approach was being used for the second consecutive year. “The children loved being part of the process, and this year, even more participated. Their excitement was truly heartwarming.”
Curator Hamad Al-Muzaini spoke about the emotional significance of curating Heartful II, describing it as “a unique and fulfilling experience.” He noted the overwhelming community support. “People showed up for Bayt Abdullah in every capacity — volunteers, artists, contributors. This wasn’t just an art exhibition; it was a blend of so many elements. Seeing it all come together in one space was truly beautiful.”
Reflecting on the theme of play, Al-Muzaini shared: “Personally, I found it reflective as well — almost like holding up a mirror. The topic of play naturally connects to childhood, making it deeply nostalgic and thought-provoking for everyone involved.”
Fellow curator Alymamah Rashed elaborated on the diverse interpretations of the theme. “We were fortunate to create an exhibition cantered on the theme of play,” she said. The showcase included collaborative pieces like body mapping works and Ali Yusufi’s squares, alongside submitted artworks. “Each artist approached the theme in their own way. Even those without prior experience working with children found the process enriching,” she noted.
The event also featured The Art Bazaar, a dedicated space showcasing works by 11 additional artists. This expanded the scope of artistic expression while offering attendees a chance to support the cause. Through its blend of artistry and purpose, Heartful II exemplified the healing power of creativity. “It’s initiatives like these that show the strength of our community and the transformative role of art in bringing joy and connection,” Al-Sayer said.
