Kuwait, Spain work together to raise climate awareness

KUWAIT: Kuwait University, in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in Kuwait, hosted the closing ceremony of the exhibition “The Coasts from Space.” The event featured a compelling lecture by Spanish Professor Dr Lucas Alados, highlighting the intersection of science, technology, and environmental stewardship.

Dr Alados emphasized the exhibition’s roots in collaboration with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and Spain’s Ministry of Science and Innovation. He described it as a cornerstone of Spain’s broader strategy of scientific diplomacy, spearheaded by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and actively pursued by the Embassy in Kuwait.

“Through initiatives like the Oceánicas exhibition, the Age of Glass exhibition, and collaborative seminars with KFAS and KISR on agro-technology in arid lands, we have built a strong relationship with Kuwaiti institutions. Kuwait University has become our second home,” Dr Alados remarked.

The Spanish Ambassador to Kuwait also delivered a speech celebrating Spain’s coastlines and the groundbreaking role of space technology in understanding and preserving them. “This exhibition is a unique blend of art and science, showcasing the beauty of coastal regions worldwide through satellite imagery captured by Sentinel 2A and Sentinel 2B,” he said. “It provides a new perspective on the delicate balance between land, sea, and atmosphere, while also spotlighting the pressing challenges of climate change, erosion, and rising sea levels.”

The ambassador also reflected on recent natural disasters, including the devastating floods in Valencia, Spain, which underscored the urgent need for sustainable environmental practices. He praised the resilience of the Spanish people in the face of such challenges and drew parallels to the shared global responsibility of protecting vulnerable ecosystems.

Images from the exhibition highlighted the potential of satellite technology to monitor and mitigate the effects of climate change, track natural disasters, and foster a deeper understanding of Earth’s coastal ecosystems. The collaboration between Spain and Kuwait, supported by institutions like KFAS and KISR, was a recurring theme throughout the event. “This partnership represents a promising avenue for future cooperation,” the ambassador noted, expressing gratitude for the continued support of Kuwaiti institutions in promoting scientific and cultural exchange. The exhibition served as a vivid reminder of the power of international collaboration in advancing knowledge, protecting the environment, and strengthening bonds between nations.
