Fusion of art and functionality

Kuwaiti artist Shaima Ashkanani blends vibrant paintings, custom furniture and lighting designs to create immersive art experiences

Prominent Kuwaiti artist Shaima Ashkanani has captivated audiences with her abstract sculptures and installations, blending creativity and functionality into her latest exhibition, The Story of a Letter. The showcase featured 24 pieces, including large-scale mural paintings, 10 lighting designs and custom-painted furniture. Speaking with Kuwait Times, Ashkanani described her goal of creating a dynamic visitor experience by merging visual and functional art.

“My inspiration comes from being surrounded by creativity my entire life,” she shared. “Growing up in a household with a fine artist as a father significantly influenced my journey. My late father’s passion for art instilled a deep appreciation for the creative process, which my academic studies later honed, shaping my distinct style.”

Ashkanani’s works resonate on both aesthetic and emotional levels, often combining natural and industrial materials. Her innovative approach blends traditional craftsmanship with modern design, evoking movement and emotion. Each piece, she said, tells its own story, reflecting days or even months of effort, reflection and emotion.

Her technique is equally distinctive. “I primarily paint on linen canvas with acrylics, but I never use colors directly from the tube or pre-made palettes,” Ashkanani explained. “Instead, I mix and layer my own colors to achieve shades that align with my vision. Some works involve intricate layering for texture and depth, while others embrace simplicity to suit modern interiors.”

Ashkanani’s work transcends traditional boundaries by integrating art into furniture and lighting design. “I wanted to create a fusion of art and functionality,” she said. “My pieces are not limited to walls; they extend to interior décor elements. For example, a client can purchase a painting and a matching lighting piece, creating a seamless addition to their home.”

Expanding Horizons

Ashkanani has showcased her work in Kuwait and internationally, earning recognition for her innovative techniques and designs. Reflecting on her experiences, she noted, “Past exhibitions have allowed me to connect with diverse audiences and build an extensive artistic archive. These experiences inspire me to explore new markets and present my work on a broader scale.”

Following The Story of a Letter, she plans to expand her exhibitions internationally. While locations are yet to be finalized, she is excited to share her art globally. Her participation in numerous group exhibitions has also enriched her artistic perspective, advancing collaboration and idea exchange. Although her primary focus remains on solo exhibitions, she is still open to participating in group projects that align with her artistic vision.

“This exhibition is not just a showcase of my work but a reflection of my journey as an artist,” Ashkanani said. “I hope people find pieces that speak to them — not just as decorative items but as meaningful additions to their lives.” Looking ahead, her mission remains steadfast: To create art that bridges emotion and functionality, leaving a lasting impact on those who experience it.
