Kuwait launches forum to transform libraries into community hubs

KUWAIT: The “Third-Generation Libraries” cultural training forum and exhibition was launched on Tuesday, aiming to transform libraries in Kuwait into dynamic community hubs that actively contribute to cultural, social and economic progress. Organized by the Library and Information Association of Kuwait in collaboration with the National Library of Kuwait, the event is held under the patronage of Minister of Information and Culture and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi.

Hosted at the National Library of Kuwait, the forum focuses on positioning libraries as vital contributors to societal development. In his opening speech, Secretary-General of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters Dr Mohammad Al-Jassar emphasized the need for libraries to evolve from traditional knowledge repositories into proactive institutions that drive cultural and intellectual growth.

“In an era defined by rapid technological advancements and artificial intelligence, libraries must adapt to remain relevant,” Dr Al-Jassar said. He stressed the importance of leveraging technology to make libraries key players in global development and peace-building efforts. The forum also seeks to enhance library staff capabilities, enabling them to meet the changing needs of knowledge seekers and foster intellectual growth.

Dr Abdulaziz Al-Swait, Chairman of the Kuwait Library and Information Association, highlighted that the forum will explore integrating advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence, into library systems. Over three days, more than 350 experts, specialists and stakeholders from government and private sectors will discuss the future of libraries and their role in shaping a more inclusive cultural landscape.

Workshops and sessions will cover topics like “Artificial Intelligence Applications in Libraries” and “The Role of Information Specialists in Third-Generation Libraries”. These discussions aim to position Kuwait’s libraries as leaders in technological innovation and cultural inclusion.

An accompanying exhibition brings together public and private sector entities to showcase innovative solutions and projects that enhance Kuwait’s knowledge infrastructure. The exhibition serves as a platform for collaboration and networking, underscoring the role of libraries as hubs for technological advancement and knowledge sharing.

The forum highlights Kuwait’s commitment to evolving its libraries into forward-thinking institutions at the heart of community life and educational progress. Dr Al-Jassar expressed hope that these efforts will enable libraries to contribute to the global information revolution, advancing knowledge, creativity and innovation in Kuwait.

By integrating cutting-edge technologies and fostering collaboration, the “Third-Generation Libraries” forum marks a significant step in transforming libraries into essential centers of community engagement, empowering future generations of learners. The event will run for three days, offering interactive sessions and discussions on the challenges and opportunities in redefining libraries as centers of innovation. — KUNA
