S African envoy celebrated as tenure ends

KUWAIT: South African Ambassador to Kuwait Dr Manelisi Genge expressed his gratitude to the leadership, government, and people of Kuwait, particularly the African Affairs Department, the Legal Affairs Department, and the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for their support and cooperation during his tenure, which comes to an end this year. Speaking at a farewell event hosted by the Director of the Contemporary Art Platform Amer Huneidi on Tuesday, the South African ambassador stated that he leaves Kuwait after helping establish a robust legal framework for diplomatic relations between the two nations.

He added “This includes signing the Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC) Agreement and the entry into force of the Protocol Amending the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of South Africa and the Government of Kuwait for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and Prevention of Fiscal Evasion concerning Taxes and Income. And successfully negotiating other agreements and memorandums of understanding, which are now ready for signing.”

The ambassador acknowledged the support the embassy received from Kuwait’s business community, local media, and tourism companies, which played a vital role in strengthening bilateral relations between South Africa and Kuwait. He highlighted the significant growth in trade between the two countries and a notable increase in Kuwaiti tourists visiting South Africa, especially during the past summer.

Additionally, he noted that the importation of South African food products by Kuwaiti companies has contributed to Kuwait’s food security goals. He also recalled the landmark visit of South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation to Kuwait in 2021, which marked a significant step in enhancing bilateral political relations. In his closing remarks, he said: “I leave Kuwait wiser, thanks to my interactions with dear colleagues, ambassadors, and friends, as well as my engagements with officials of the host country. I will be leaving Kuwait with fond memories, which I will cherish for the rest of my life. What a beautiful country with equally nice and friendly people.”
