KUWAIT: The Kuwait Dive Team is urging fishermen to avoid using nets near coral reefs in order to protect marine life and preserve these vital ecosystems. Team leader Walid Al-Fadhil emphasized that such fishing practices not only damage coral reefs but also pose a significant risk to maritime navigation. He noted that these activities violate environmental laws designed to safeguard marine life.
As part of ongoing conservation efforts, the team has completed maintenance on marine mooring buoys at Qaruh and Umm al-Maradim Islands. This maintenance is part of a broader project to ensure that moorings are in optimal condition and capable of serving their intended purpose. The moorings, which are widely used by boaters to anchor, also help mark the locations of coral reefs that can be hazardous to vessels, especially at low tide. Acting as a first line of defense, these moorings help prevent damage to the coral reefs from human activity.
In total, 130 high-quality moorings have been installed across Kuwait’s southern islands, carefully designed to accommodate various boat and yacht sizes. This includes 22 moorings at Qaruh Island and 23 at Umm al-Maradim Island. The moorings have been strategically placed around these islands and coral reefs, taking into account both environmental and aesthetic considerations.
Al-Fadhil highlighted that the coral reefs around these islands are among Kuwait’s most beautiful and ecologically significant marine sites, attracting numerous divers and marine enthusiasts. These reefs, which support a variety of coral species, are located at depths ranging from 3 to 19 meters. Due to rising water temperatures, Kuwait is home to only 40 species of coral.
The diving team leader also emphasized that the coral reefs around Kuwait’s southern islands and coastal areas are crucial habitats for marine life and fish, providing both ecological and economic benefits. The team has been dedicated to preserving these reefs for years, working on various initiatives and projects to protect marine life. In addition, they organize awareness campaigns aimed at promoting marine conservation both within Kuwait and internationally. — KUNA
