Kuwait calls to protect Gaza journalists

‘Blatant assault’ by Zionists a gross violation of Palestinian rights

NEW YORK: Kuwait condemned the targeting of journalists in Gaza by Zionist forces, describing it as a “blatant assault” on the Palestinian people’s right to communicate their suffering to the world. Kuwait urged the international community to take a firm stance in protecting journalists and media institutions, particularly in conflict zones.

This statement was delivered by Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Mubarak Al-Qamis, before the UN General Assembly’s Fourth Committee, discussing “Media Issues”. Qamis asserted that the systematic targeting of journalists and media institutions by the Zionist occupation aims to obscure the truth and prevent the world from understanding the harsh realities faced by Palestinians. He stressed the importance of access to accurate, objective information reflecting reality without distortion.

Qamis warned that global challenges require a balanced and reliable media approach characterized by transparency and credibility, as media plays a vital role in shaping public awareness and promoting shared human values. The diplomat emphasized the need for initiatives to protect journalists and ensure a safe environment for their work, calling it a humanitarian responsibility to uphold the right to accurate information and freedom of expression.

Qamis also noted Kuwait’s support for UN efforts to enhance media integrity and combat misinformation. He highlighted the importance of partnerships between governments, media and social media platforms to ensure a safe, transparent and credible media environment. Kuwait, he added, remains committed to international cooperation in developing modern media that serves the needs of all people and supports an equitable approach to information access.

The diplomat explained that such cooperation should include joint efforts to develop independent media, enhance digital capabilities, and provide technical support to developing countries, which contributes to strengthening stability and building more resilient societies.

Qamis outlined Kuwait’s achievements in developing its media sector, including a strategy to promote media freedom, enhance transparency, support digital transformation, and improve media efficiency. The ministry of information, he noted, has archived nearly 200,000 film and photographic materials to preserve Kuwait’s media heritage and document its rich history for future generations.

He mentioned that Kuwait’s new media regulation law aims to establish responsible freedoms aligned with global developments, reinforcing Kuwait’s role as a leader in free media within the region. In conclusion, Qamis reaffirmed Kuwait’s full support for UN efforts to ensure a fair and transparent media environment, essential for global peace and security. He emphasized Kuwait’s ongoing collaboration with member states to establish media standards based on integrity and credibility. — KUNA
