KUWAIT: Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Al-Yahya reaffirmed Kuwait’s principled and steadfast stance in rejecting all forms of terrorism and violent extremism. He expressed support for international efforts and relevant UN resolutions aimed at combating terrorism, particularly the significant global efforts in the coalition against the so-called Islamic State (ISIS), in which Kuwait is a partner. He noted the coalition’s effective role in Iraq, Syria, and Africa to eradicate terrorism and radical extremism.
The statement came during Al-Yahya’s speech at the ministerial session of the fourth high-level conference "Strengthening International Counter-Terrorism Cooperation and Building Agile Border Security Mechanisms - The Kuwait Phase of the Dushanbe Process” hosted by Kuwait under patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah represented His Highness the Amir at the conference.
Yahya noted Kuwait’s clear role in combating terrorism, chairing the anti-terrorist group that came out of the global coalition against IS, in partnership with Turkey and the Netherlands. He also highlighted Kuwait’s effective cooperation with the United States in facilitating the transfer of family members of foreign terrorists from camps in Syria and Iraq to their home countries.
He emphasized Kuwait’s appreciation for all international and regional efforts in combating terrorism and violent extremism despite the numerous challenges facing the global community today. He pointed out that terrorism continues to pose a serious threat to international security, targeting no specific group, religion, or ethnicity, but instead spreading fear and destabilizing societies.
Yahya stressed that international efforts alone are insufficient to eliminate terrorism and its threats, making it imperative to enhance regional and international cooperation to develop an effective, systematic plan to combat terrorism and extremism, addressing their root causes.
Yahya expressed hope that this conference would yield positive and tangible results that would continue the international community’s successes in nipping terrorism in the bud. Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon stressed that the conference would strengthen cooperation against terrorism regionally and internationally, in Central Asia, the Arab League, Africa and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The president affirmed Tajikistan’s commitment to cooperate with the UN and all international partners as the initiator of the "Dushanbe Process”, noting that terrorism, extremism and violence have become a global threat. He added that influencing young minds into committing terrorist acts has become a weapon for terrorist organizations, which allows them to change social and political systems in their favor. Rahmon said educational programs and social projects can help reduce the risks of extremism.
Additionally, providing law enforcement officials with professional training in technology can play a very effective role in strengthening their capabilities. Rahmon reiterated that to combat terrorism successfully, there needs to be extensive and coordinated international cooperation. A critical component of this approach involves the sharing of information and the exchange of advanced expertise, he added.
Terrorist groups continuously attempt to breach borders to expand their criminal activities, underscoring the importance of ensuring robust border security and identifying opportunities to further reinforce it. Tajikistan is confident that the Kuwait Phase of the Dushanbe Process Conference would amplify collective efforts to combat terrorism and extremism, enhancing the shared commitment to a safer world. — KUNA
