Al-Dabbous Center treats 10 complex cases of pulmonary embolism

KUWAIT: Al-Dabbous Center in Al-Adan Hospital has performed 10 complex procedures to treat pulmonary embolisms, some of which were done using the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system, said Dr Ahmad Al-Shatti, Head of the Cardiac Catheterization Unit at the center.

The cases, he said, had no other treatment options besides catheterization. In a press statement on Saturday, Dr Al-Shatti explained that the most modern medical treatment techniques were used in these procedures according to each case, and that these cases were referred to Al-Dabbous Center from several hospitals across the country.

He confirmed that a pulmonary embolism response team was recently launched Al-Dabbous Heart Center with the participation of Dr Riyadh Al-Tarazi, Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department and Dr Mohammad Shamsah, Head of the Intensive Care Unit at Al-Farwaniya Hospital. He emphasized that this unit represents a significant advancement in the treatment of pulmonary embolism cases.

He pointed out that traditional treatment involves administering thrombolytics, but if there is an increased risk of bleeding for the patient, treatment can be effectively carried out within this unit using local anesthesia, conducted in the catheterization laboratories at Al-Dabbous Heart Center with the latest techniques for removing pulmonary embolisms.

Al-Shatti said he carried out two procedures that were transferred from Farwaniya Hospital, and the procedure was done with the Penumbra Cat 16 Flash, which is the most modern technique currently available.

Dr Al-Shatti mentioned that the modern techniques provided by the Ministry of Health at Al-Adan Hospital and Al-Dabbous Center for treating pulmonary embolisms are on par with those in advanced countries, adding that the hospital is keen on keeping up with the latest global medical technologies and bringing them to the hospital to serve citizens and enhance the capabilities of medical staff. He thanked the health Minister Dr Ahmad Al-Awadhi and Undersecretary Dr Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi for their continuous support and efforts to develop the hospital with the latest technologies.
