IDCK promotes, supports women empowerment

KUWAIT: To enlighten the experiences of pioneering businesswomen and support the empowerment of Kuwaiti women, the International Diplomatic Club in Kuwait (IDCK) met with Sabeeka Al-Bahr and Jihan Marafi, two certified brokers in the Kuwaiti real estate industry, on Tuesday, at Souq Al-Manakh. Ghada Shawky, wife of the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt and president of the executive board of the IDCK, along with the IDCK’s delegation were honored to have the chance to learn about the Kuwaiti women’s journey of growth and achievement as women in a predominantly male field.

Both Marafi and Al-Bahr described the nature of their work and the challenges they encounter in their line of work, especially since it is a male-dominated field. Speaking to the media, Al-Bahr stated that the presence of Kuwaiti women is strong today and the support for women in the real estate market was evident, adding “We extend our gratitude to all the brokers for their support on this day. Our entry into the Al-Manakh market is just the beginning, and we hope it will be a significant addition to the world of real estate brokerage.”

She noted that working with Marafi at Souq Al-Manakh will empower Kuwaiti women economically, noting “As women, we have the capability to enter the real estate market, work together, and support each other hand in hand, proving that women can succeed in any field and pursue any career within the economic sector.” For her part, Marafi called on women that nothing should prevent them from participating in any type of business, stating “No field is exclusive to men, and women can excel in real estate brokerage. It’s a rewarding profession, and if you have the skills and professionalism, you can succeed, regardless of gender.”

“Men have a greater opportunity in their circles and gatherings (diwaniyas), allowing them to reach a wide audience interested in buying, selling, or investing in real estate. On the other hand, women often find themselves needing to seek information from male relatives like a brother, father, uncle, or male broker. Why should that be limited to men? Access to information shouldn’t be restricted,” she explained.

She concluded “This message is for every Kuwaiti woman and every woman around the world: real estate brokerage is not exclusive to men. It is a noble and fulfilling profession, and we encourage women to step into this field.” The group was comprised of IDCK members, which included female Ambassadors and wives of Ambassadors. They also extended an invitation for prominent Kuwaiti women in the political sphere to join them.

The delegation was additionally honored with the presence of the former minister of Social Affairs Dr Ghadeer Aseri and Alia Al Khaled, former Kuwaiti MP. Following the opening ceremony and the tour in Souq Al-Manakh, the IDCK members had the opportunity to visit Souq Al-Mubarakiya, Kuwait’s oldest and most famous market. The ladies, who were accompanied by three guides, had the great opportunity to experience the lively atmosphere that has been flourishing for over 200 years.

The Souq is a true gem of local goods such as handicrafts, vintage goods, spices, textiles, and other commodities. It is also a gastronomy haven, where people enjoy delicious Kuwaiti dishes; and to experience a perfect Kuwaiti day, the members were generously invited for lunch at Souq Al-Mubarakiya.
