GENEVA: Kuwaiti representative at the United Nations, Counselor Abdullah Al-Khubaizi, warned of the ramifications of the humanitarian crises in the region on refugees’ basic rights, as he also condemned the use of illegal methods of starvation and blockade of aid as war weapons. During the 75th refugee agency meeting in Geneva, Al-Khubaizi called on the international community to take a serious stance and guarantee the rights of war victims.
Al-Khubaizi also stressed the need to face challenges undermining regional and international stability and security, especially as the region undergoes recurring crises, leaving behind an unprecedented number of refugees in blatant disregard of international laws. He further underlined the importance of reforming the Security Council to enhance response to crises and become more efficient and comprehensive, stating that the waning of confidence in the UN’s efficiency is hurting its integrity.
Counselor Al-Khubaizi renewed Kuwait’s commitment to host countries of refugees and to sharing responsibilities and burdens, saying that Kuwait is keen on extending a helping hand to all those in need. Total Kuwaiti aid to UNHCR alone reached $500 million over the past 10 years, he added. The counselor took the time to reaffirm Kuwait’s support for UNHCR’s endeavors, aiming to help build a better future for all. The commission’s executive committee holds its meetings annually in Geneva to review and approve projects and budgets as well as give counsel on international protection and discuss a slew of issues. — KUNA
