KU and Zain empower girls with digital skills

Company supports ‘Girls Powered’ workshop, part of the National Robotics Competition

KUWAIT: Zain supported the ‘Girls Powered’ workshop, one of the programs under the Kuwait National Robotics Competition (KNRC), organized by the Computer Science Department of the College of Science at Kuwait University, the Youth Public Authority, and the Ministry of Education, in partnership with Zain. The workshop aimed to invest in the digital skills and capabilities of girls and young women, focusing on empowering their technical expertise in various fields.

This initiative aligns with the shared vision of the Computer Science Department and Zain to support creativity and enhance technical skills within the community, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), specialties that are increasingly demanded by modern job markets. The workshop had a specific emphasis on empowering girls and young women to inspire them to enter and excel in these fields.

The workshop, organized in collaboration with the Women’s Cultural and Social Society, saw the participation of around 90 girls aged 8 to 14 years. During the event, the girls were empowered to acquire new skills in robotics and programming while enhancing their abilities in utilizing advanced tools and techniques associated with these fields through interactive and practical methods. A range of hands-on activities was also held, fostering a spirit of collaboration and teamwork among the young participants. This contributed to boosting the girls’ self-confidence and enhancing their problem-solving and creative thinking skills. The workshops were led and supervised by faculty members from the Computer Science Department.

This year, Zain returns as a strategic partner for the new season of the Kuwait National Robotics Competition in collaboration with the Computer Science Department, the Youth Public Authority, and the Ministry of Education. The company has seen remarkable success following its support of the previous edition of this initiative after months of hard work and creativity, which culminated in Kuwait University’s team winning the Build Award at the VEX Robotics World Championship held in the United States.

The competition contributes to fostering Kuwaiti students’ passion for technology and enhancing their creative thinking while helping them chart their future career paths and preparing them to enter STEM fields. This effort is the result of direct and effective collaboration between public and private sector institutions to prepare the next generation of technology leaders in Kuwait. This partnership comes as part of Innovation Nation, the initiative under which all of Zain’s innovation and entrepreneurship programs fall, with a focus on STEM areas. The initiative mainly targets young people and entrepreneurs and aims to foster a digitally capable generation.
