ShareKUWAIT: The Mexican Embassy in Kuwait held a reception on Monday to mark the 214th anniversary of the Mexican Independence Movement. “I am honored to celebrate with you the beginning of the Mexican Independence Movement, which started 214 years ago in the small town of Dolores, Hidalgo,” Mexican Ambassador to Kuwait Eduardo Pena Haller said.
“It was there that the priest Miguel Hidalgo called on the people to rise against the viceroyalty of New Spain. Together with fellow priest José María Morelos y Pavón, they championed a new path for Mexico, advocating for equality, fair opportunities — especially for indigenous peoples — and the establishment of a republic based on values like universal suffrage, freedom of expression and association. These principles continue to shape Mexico as an independent nation today,” he said.
Regarding bilateral relations, Haller praised the close ties between Kuwait and Mexico. “The two nations are united by shared values such as respect for international law, a strong belief in multilateralism, the promotion of peaceful coexistence and a commitment to international cooperation as a key instrument in building a more just and equitable world,” he said.
He also noted the growing closeness between the countries in recent years, citing high-level visits and the signing of 25 treaties and agreements. “Trade between Kuwait and Mexico is growing at an annual rate of 28.5 percent,” he added. The ambassador highlighted the contributions of 150 Mexicans living in Kuwait, commending their work ethic, sense of community and dedication, which he said reflect the best of Mexico abroad.
He concluded by announcing: “On October 1, Mexico opened a new chapter in its history. For the first time, our country’s presidency is held by a woman, Dr Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. This moment holds great political, economic and social significance and will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on Mexico’s future.”
