AI cams to record traffic violations

KUWAIT: The traffic department has started installing artificial intelligence-aided highly advanced cameras that will automatically record violations, especially not fastening seatbelts and using of mobile phones while driving, the interior ministry announced on Sunday. So far, traffic officials have been recording such violations through policemen only.

The new technology aims at enhancing the safety of commuters by detecting traffic offences precisely and effectively to ensure drivers respect and abide by traffic rules, the ministry said in a statement. The interior ministry called on drivers to abide by the traffic laws, advising them to strictly use seatbelts and avoid using mobiles while driving for their safety.

The ministry said the installation of the cameras is a part of a comprehensive strategy to consolidate safety on roads and reduce accidents and the number of deaths. More than 300 people are killed every year because of traffic accidents.
