NEW YORK: Representative of HH the Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, HH the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, reaffirmed keenness to participate in the Summit of the Future and all meetings during the UN General Assembly’s 79th Session. HH the Crown Prince, during a meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the 79th UNGA Session, called on member countries to join hands, develop the UN and promote its role to boost international security and stability as well as achieve the sustainable development goals.

He conveyed greetings of HH the Amir and his support of the UN’s "important and vital” role, as well as his recognition of the endeavors of Guterres. Guterres commended Kuwait’s "active and historic” support of the UN’s activities and affirmed the importance of backing international peace and security. The two leaders discussed regional and international developments, the UN’s role in promoting international peace and security and achieving sustainable development. the two leaders discussed the strong Kuwait-UN partnership and exchanged views over the Middle East, Sudan, peace and security in the Gulf region.

HH Sheikh Sabah also met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at his residence in New York. HH the Crown Prince relayed the greetings of HH the Amir to President Abbas. He asserted Kuwait’s unswaying solidarity and support to the Palestinian people in their quest to attain their legitimate rights, including the establishment of an independent state.

HH the Crown Prince recalled the United Nations General Assembly’s resolution in its emergency 10th special session, which had garnered a sweeping majority and had relied on the International Court of Justice’s ruling regarding the Zionist occupation’s practices in occupied Palestinian lands and their illegal settlements. The two leaders deliberated the sturdy Kuwaiti-Palestinian relations and modes of developing them to serve both nations and boost joint Arab work.

UN members adopted a blueprint for the future Sunday to tackle the myriad wars, environmental threats and technological challenges facing humanity that was hailed by the organization as "groundbreaking”. Guterres, who championed the "Pact for the Future” and its components, billed them as "landmark agreements — a step-change towards more effective, inclusive, networked multilateralism”. HH the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah also addressed the summit.

Leaders pledged to bolster the multilateral system to "keep pace with a changing world” and to "protect the needs and interests of current and future generations” facing "persistent crisis”. "We believe there is a path to a brighter future for all of humanity,” the document says. The pact outlines 56 "actions,” including commitments to multilateralism, upholding the UN Charter and peacekeeping.

It also calls for reforms to international financial institutions and the UN Security Council, along with renewed efforts to combat climate change, promote disarmament, and guide the development of artificial intelligence. – Agencies
