Sahabat Amal team brings aid, support to Kenyan communities

KUWAIT: A group of 30 volunteers from various Gulf countries embarked on a humanitarian mission to Kenya from August 24 to September 1, 2024. The Sahabat Amal volunteer team visited three regions — Nairobi, Mombasa and Malindi — bringing aid and support to vulnerable communities.

The volunteers visited schools, orphanages and shelters, meeting scholars of Islamic jurisprudence and the Holy Quran, widows and impoverished families. They provided much-needed assistance, distributing 200 food baskets, school supplies, clothes and toys to local children, and organized a marathon. In one of their efforts, the team built a small shop for a widow supporting seven children, helping her achieve financial independence.

The team’s work extended beyond material aid. They painted classrooms, assessed the needs of schools and shelters, and made a special visit to a girls’ shelter for victims of harassment, offering emotional support. A full-day medical camp was organized, where the volunteers — many of whom work in the medical field — examined, treated and provided medicine to villagers. Additionally, donations collected from generous individuals helped fund the purchase of sewing machines for destitute women, enabling them to earn a living through sewing.

While the trip focused on humanitarian efforts, the team also explored Kenya’s cultural landmarks and ancient sites, and participated in local artistic events, balancing their work with moments of leisure, including safaris and visits to waterfalls and the sea. The success of this mission was made possible through the generosity of individual donors and sponsors, whose contributions allowed the team to make an impact on the communities they served.
