KUWAIT: Kuwait has unveiled stunning new opening ceremony outfits for its Olympic athletes, designed by talented Kuwaiti designer Farah Al-Babtain. In a display of cultural pride and modern elegance, Babtain has crafted an exquisite thobe for Kuwait’s athletes, drawing inspiration from the national poem "Memoirs of a Sailor” by Dr Mohammad Al-Fayez. The design captures the indomitable spirit and perseverance of the Kuwaiti people, resonating with the essence of Kuwait’s historic journey and its deep connection to the sea.
The opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, set along the iconic Seine River, will celebrate Kuwait’s rich cultural heritage while highlighting its modern achievements and aspirations. The athletes, journeying on boats on the river, will visually embody the lyrics of "Memoirs of a Sailor”, paying tribute to Kuwait’s maritime legacy.
The chosen attire features the traditional Kuwaiti "thobe al-nashl” in a striking blue hue, symbolizing both the serene sway of Kuwait’s seas and the official color of the national team. The garment is adorned with precious crystals, adding a touch of brilliance and elegance. Verses from "Memoirs of a Sailor” are meticulously embroidered with golden threads and accented with fine metallic stones, enhancing the attire’s regal appearance.
A distinctive belt, decorated with the vibrant colors of the Kuwaiti flag and incorporating traditional Sadu art, further accentuates the ensemble, symbolizing hope and resilience. This design element represents the beauty of Kuwait’s desert sands and its enduring spirit.
Rowing athlete Soad Alfaqaan will proudly bear the flag for Kuwait at the ceremony. She will be joined by athletes Lara Dashti from the swimming team and Ameenah Shah from the sailing team.
