KUWAIT: The Scientific Center of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences announced the hosting of a sustainability camp for children entitled ‘Towards a Sustainable Community Partnership’ in partnership with the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) in Kuwait and the Arab Gulf countries. The program will continue until August 31.

The Director General of the Center, Musaed Al-Yassin, said that the camp is an important opportunity to enhance environmental and scientific awareness among the rising generation and to prepare them to be future leaders in the field of sustainability. Al-Yassin expressed his hope in creating more awareness programs on the environment and natural resources and to affirm the center’s position as a distinguished educational destination that contributes to the dissemination of knowledge to all segments of society.

He explained that organizing such programs contributes to developing children’s understanding of sustainability and the use of natural resources in a responsible manner, developing their skills in the fields of engineering, medicine, and innovation, in addition to promoting the values of teamwork and social responsibility. For her part, the Head of Mission of Habitat to Kuwait and the GCC, Dr. Amira Al-Hassan, stressed the importance of partnership to support local efforts in spreading the culture of sustainability and promoting environmental awareness among young generations, which contributes to achieving the sustainable development goals and ‘New Kuwait 2035’ vision.

Al-Hassan pointed to Habitat’s model of permanent and fruitful cooperation through partnership with the Scientific Center and encouraging volunteer teams to actively participate in such initiatives—to promote environmental and community health. She pointed to the importance of engineering and medicine majors in society and sustainable development plans, pointing to their vital role in developing innovative solutions. The camp aims to enable children and youth to develop their skills so as to enhance their abilities to face future environmental and social challenges.

For her part, the head of the Sustainability Camp for Children and founder of the Enviro Volunteer Team of Habitat, Fatima Ashkanani, said that participation in this camp with the support of the Kuwait Healthy Cities Office comes to promote the health of the individual and society and the application of sustainability standards and the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Ashkanani added that the aim is to employ the creative energies of the ambitious Kuwaiti youth. — KUNA
