Kuwait: UNSC 2474 resolution “historic” for missing persons

NEW YORK: The State of Kuwait Permanent Delegate to the United Nations Ambassador Tareq Al-Bannai affirmed that the Security Council resolution 2474 regarding missing persons in armed conflicts is a historic achievement towards justice. This came in Al-Bannai’s speech late Thursday during an Arria-formula Security Council meeting on the aforementioned resolution, which was unanimously adopted and cosponsored by 68 countries.

It is an important step towards addressing the consequences of those missing in armed conflicts, Al-Bannai noted. He explained that resolution 2474 supports the Council’s efforts in putting forth a comprehensive strategy preventing disappearances, ensuring accountability, and providing support to affected families of the missing persons. An Arria-formula meeting is part of the UN Security Council where members and nonmembers can address issues in confidentiality. Resolution 2474 was penned by Kuwait in 2019, underscoring the appropriate measures taken to actively search for missing persons in armed conflicts. — Kuna
