CAIRO: Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim Duaij Al-Sabah affirmed Kuwait’s keenness on allowing women to play a greater role in peace and security issues as well as in the decision-making process. Speaking to KUNA after her participation in a training course on “mediation and protecting refugee rights” in Cairo on June 3–4, Sheikh Jawaher said that Kuwait has recently formed a national committee to implement UN Security Council Resolution No 1325 of 2000 on women, peace, and security.

The UN resolution acknowledged the disproportionate and unique impact of armed conflict on women and girls. It calls for the adoption of a gender perspective to consider the special needs of women and girls during conflict, repatriation and resettlement, rehabilitation, reintegration, and post-conflict reconstruction. Sheikha Jawaher also commended the Arab League’s efforts to help Arab women play an active role in mediation.

The two-day course was organized by the Arab League in collaboration with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the UN Women Regional Office of Arab States for members of the Arab Women Meditators Network.

Sheikha Jawaher said that this training course aimed to enhance the capabilities of members of the Arab Women Mediators Network on mediation and protecting the rights of refugees and to shed light on the current challenges facing by the region. Displacement is one of the major repercussions of conflicts, and the number of refugees has increased recently, she stated, adding that the majority of refugees are women and children. — KUNA
