Turkey ‘renowned for its vibrant Ramadan traditions’: Envoy

KUWAIT: The Turkish Embassy in Kuwait held a ghabga on Tuesday to transcend borders and cultures and celebrate the spirit of unity, compassion and reflection. “Turkey is renowned for its vibrant Ramadan traditions, festive decorations and lively celebrations. During Ramadan, Turkish cities come alive with colorful lights adorning the streets and bustling markets where shoppers purchase special foods and treats for the evening meal,” Turkish Ambassador Tuba Nur Sonmez said

She noted that being away from home during this sacred month can evoke feelings of homesickness, but fortunately, she finds solace in Kuwait, a place rich in traditions that “make me feel at home”.

“Here, we partake in ghabgas and diwaniyas, distribute sweets to children dressed in traditional attire for Girgian, and savor traditional Kuwaiti dishes during iftar and suhoor. Yet beyond the colorful customs lies the true essence of Ramadan. It is more than just a month — it is a time of self-discovery, empathy and renewal,” Sonmez said.

The ambassador concluded with the Ramadan message of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, quoting: “Let us make the most of the merciful atmosphere of Ramadan by praying to Almighty Allah to bring an end to the suffering, systematic atrocities, torture and oppression in various parts of the world, especially in Palestine.”
