KUWAIT: The digitalization of Ramadan is set to shape the way people celebrate and connect during this holy month. Technology has revolutionized the way individuals exchange greetings and wishes during the month, by sending ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ texts or graphics, besides the traditional practices and events that once used to be celebrated in person, such as Graish, ghabgas and Girgian, which have now found a digital path. Television and online channels and platforms nowadays present these cultural celebrations through livestreams, virtual gatherings and interactive activities.
According to Reem Fares, technology has given the holy month of Ramadan a modern look. "Many celebrations and events that are related to this month can now be enjoyed on TV, with some shows even broadcasting live late at night and enjoying suhoor with their guests. While some may feel that experiencing Ramadan events digitally is not as good and authentic as experiencing it physically and in person, I see that technology has actually enhanced my enjoyment of this month,” she explained.
Fares also told Kuwait Times that in the past few years, she had been feeling uninspired during the month of Ramadan. "I simply used to fast, pray and accomplish the obligatory rituals that our religion specifies for this month. However, watching people celebrate this month, whether on TV or scrolling through social media, has refreshed my excitement for the month,” she said.
"Technology has romanticized the holy month of Ramadan and taught me to enjoy and anticipate it. I also developed an interest in me to decorate and invite people to my house, buy new daraas and prayer rugs, decorate my house and change the whole atmosphere, inspired by what I see on TV. Another thing I really love are the ads and shows that make you feel the ambience of this time of the year. My kids, my husband and I gather after futoor to watch Ramadan TV shows, which have a different taste,” Fares added.
