KU, MoH develop AI algorithm to check catheterization flaws

KUWAIT: In a groundbreaking scientific achievement at the GCC level, a research team from the Medical Sciences Center at Kuwait University, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and represented by the Sabah Al-Ahmad Cardiac Center, has successfully developed the first artificial intelligence algorithm designed to predict complications affecting acute coronary artery patients within 30 days of catheterization in Kuwait.

The team, comprising Dr Mohammed Al-Khamis, Dr Mohammed Zubaid and Dr Mohammed Al-Jarallah, Head of the Cardiology Department at the Sabah Al-Ahmad Cardiac Center at Amiri Hospital, has created a prototype artificial intelligence algorithm. This algorithm demonstrates the capability to predict potential complications impacting acute coronary artery patients’ post-catheterization, with an impressive accuracy rate of up to 80 percent within 30 days of their hospital discharge in Kuwait.

The significance of this scientific research lies in its contribution to advancing the application of artificial intelligence. By enhancing and supporting the performance of cardiologists, surgeons and the healthcare system, this development aims to combat heart disease and reduce its prevalence, particularly considering its status as the leading cause of death globally. It’s noteworthy that the research findings have been published in the esteemed scientific journal Nature’s Scientific Reports, which holds a Q1 classification among journals with diverse and comprehensive scientific disciplines.
